| Basic Guidelines for Contributors
1. Prospective contributors should be familiar with the journalistic and photography style of Vermont Magazine in both its regular departments and stories that recently have been published. Story ideas are welcome, but we cannot reply individually to every one. Story ideas should be accompanied by a pitch as to why they are appropriate as feature material or for consideration for a specific department.
2. Vermont Magazine plans and prepares editorial months in advance of publication dates. Photos for articles may need to be taken a year in advance of a publication date in order to be seasonally appropriate and to properly support the article.
3. Event information submitted for consideration in the Essential Events calendar should be sent at least 60 days prior to issue date relative to the date of the event (example: December 31 for a March event to be listed in the March/April issue).
4.Vermont Magazine generally does not publish "single subject" stories that are intended to promote individual businesses, first-person accounts, social/political commentary, or op-ed pieces. Poetry, essays, and readers' letters will be considered for publication pro bono in, or in conjunction with, the Mailbox department. We do consider material that is newsworthy, but we do not actively "chase" the news cycle on short notice with a staff of reporters.
5. Payment upon publication is standard. Writers (and photographers) are advised not to promise a specific issue or publication date to their sources; editorial, page layouts, and page counts can and do change during the course of coordinating an issue.
Photography
Vermont Magazine uses only digital photographs (JPG or Tiff files) taken with cameras rated at 6 MB (and used on the highest resolution setting) or better. We do not buy stock photography of generic images; for example, nature or wildlife photography. In submitting images, photographers should consider whether the image conveys the impression that it could only have been taken in Vermont.
Vermont Magazine assumes no liability for unsolicited material.
